Lesson 27 Day Dry July Detox: Day 1-Reset Your FoundationAudio·7 min
Welcome and Expectations Welcome to Day 1 of the Dry July Detox! Over the next seven days, you'll learn simple, evidence-based strategies to support your brain, body, and overall well-being without alcohol. This challenge isn't about perfection—it's about giving your body a chance to reset, recharge, and heal. You may notice improvements in energy, sleep, mood, digestion, and mental clarity. Approach this week with curiosity and an open mind as you discover what helps you feel your best. Why Alcohol Depletes Nutrients Alcohol can interfere with the absorption and utilization of important nutrients, including B vitamins, magnesium, zinc, and vitamin C. These nutrients play key roles in energy production, mood regulation, brain function, and recovery. Over time, nutrient depletion can contribute to fatigue, anxiety, poor concentration, sleep problems, and cravings. One of the best ways to support healing is by nourishing your body with nutrient-dense foods. Why Blood Sugar Stability Matters Blood sugar balance plays a major role in mood, energy, and cravings. Alcohol can cause blood sugar fluctuations that leave you feeling tired, irritable, anxious, or hungry. When blood sugar remains stable, the brain feels safer, energy is more consistent, and cravings are often easier to manage. Eating balanced meals throughout the day is one of the most powerful tools for recovery. The Connection Between Low Blood Sugar and Cravings Not all cravings are emotional—many are biological. When blood sugar drops too low, the brain looks for a quick source of energy, which can trigger cravings for sugar, refined carbohydrates, or alcohol. Eating regularly and avoiding long gaps between meals can help reduce these cravings and support greater emotional stability. The Importance of Protein Protein is essential for recovery because it provides the amino acids needed to make neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and GABA. These brain chemicals influence mood, motivation, focus, and relaxation. Protein also helps stabilize blood sugar and keep you feeling satisfied. Aim to include a source of protein at every meal. Hydration and Electrolytes Alcohol contributes to dehydration and can deplete important electrolytes. Even mild dehydration can affect mood, concentration, energy, and cravings. Make hydration a priority by drinking water consistently throughout the day and including foods rich in electrolytes such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and mineral-rich broths. What You May Notice During the First Few Days Everyone's experience is different. Some people notice better sleep, improved energy, and clearer thinking within a few days. Others may experience temporary fatigue, headaches, irritability, or cravings as the body adjusts. These changes are often part of the healing process. Be patient with yourself, focus on the basics, and trust that your body is working toward balance. Today's Action Steps ✓ Eat a source of protein at every meal and snack. ✓ Drink at least half your body weight in ounces of water. ✓ Complete your Daily Detox Tracker. ✓ Listen to and practice the Box Breathing audio.
Lesson 37 Day Dry July Detox: Day 2-Understanding CravingsAudio·7 min
Welcome to Day 2 First, let's celebrate something, you made it through Day 1! Whether yesterday felt easy, challenging, or somewhere in between, you're here, and that's what matters. Today we're talking about one of the biggest concerns people have when they stop drinking: cravings. They are not a character flaw. They are not a sign of weakness. They are information. Your brain and body are constantly communicating with you. Cravings are often messages that something needs attention, whether that's nutrition, stress relief, emotional support, rest, or connection. The more we understand cravings, the less power they have over us. Let's talk about dopamine, the brain's "feel good" and motivation chemical. Alcohol creates a large surge of dopamine, which is one reason drinking can feel rewarding in the moment. Over time, the brain begins to expect that dopamine boost and may start relying on alcohol as a shortcut to feeling better. The good news is that your brain can heal. One of the most exciting things about alcohol abstainance is watching your natural reward system come back online. Activities that may have seemed boring at first like walking outside, laughing with friends, exercising, listening to music, or enjoying a great meal can become genuinely rewarding again. Your brain was designed to create pleasure naturally. Sometimes it just needs time and support to remember how. As we discussed yesterday, blood sugar and cravings are closely connected. One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is skipping meals, eating very little during the day, and then wondering why cravings hit hard later in the afternoon or evening. When blood sugar drops, the brain starts searching for quick energy. This can show up as cravings for sugar, carbs, or alcohol. Before assuming you need a drink, ask yourself a simple question: "When was the last time I ate?" You'd be surprised how often a balanced meal can quiet what feels like an alcohol craving. Sometimes cravings have nothing to do with hunger, sometimes they're connected to emotions such as stress, loneliness, frustration, boredom, Anxiety and even celebration. For many of us, alcohol became a coping tool. It became the thing we reached for when life felt uncomfortable. The challenge now isn't avoiding emotions, it's learning how to experience them without immediately trying to numb them. One of the most powerful things you can do is pause and ask yourself: "What am I actually feeling right now?" Awareness creates choice. Stress is one of the most common craving triggers I see. When we're stressed, the brain naturally wants relief. If alcohol has been your go-to stress management tool, your brain may automatically suggest it whenever life gets overwhelming. I always tell my clients: your brain isn't trying to sabotage you, it's trying to help you survive using the tools it knows. The goal isn't to fight your brain. The goal is to give it better tools. This week you're learning those tools: Breathing exercises, nourishing meals, hydration, movement, sleep, and self-care all help calm the nervous system and reduce the intensity of cravings. The neurotransmitters that influence mood, motivation, calmness, and happiness are made from amino acids found in protein-rich foods. When serotonin is low, we may feel anxious or depressed. When dopamine is low, we may feel unmotivated, flat, or uninspired. When GABA is low, we may feel stressed, overwhelmed, or unable to relax. This is one reason I emphasize protein so much. Every time you eat protein, you're providing your brain with the raw materials it needs to rebuild and repair. Food isn't just calories. Food is information for your brain. This might be the most important lesson of the day. If willpower alone worked, nobody would struggle with alcohol. Alcohol abstainance is not simply about trying harder. It's about understanding the biology, psychology, habits, and environmental factors that influence behavior. The goal is not to white-knuckle your way through alcohol abstainance, the goal is to build a toolbox that supports your brain and body so cravings become less frequent, less intense, and easier to navigate. And that is exactly what we're doing together. Today's Action Steps ✓ Track your cravings today. ✓ Notice when they happen and what was happening beforehand. ✓ Eat balanced meals with protein, healthy fats, and fiber. ✓ Identify your top three craving triggers. Reflection Question When am I most likely to want a drink?
Lesson 47 Day Dry July Detox: Day 3-The Gut Brain ConnectionAudio·7 min
Welcome to Day 3! By now, you've started nourishing your body, paying attention to cravings, and becoming more aware of how alcohol may have been affecting your daily life. Today we're exploring something fascinating: Your gut and your brain are constantly talking to each other. In fact, many people notice improvements in mood, energy, digestion, and mental clarity when they begin supporting their gut health. Your Gut Is More Than Digestion Most people think the gut's job is simply to digest food. But your gut does so much more. It helps absorb nutrients, regulate inflammation, support immunity, and even influence mood. Scientists often refer to the gut as the body's "second brain" because of its powerful connection to mental and emotional well-being. Alcohol and Gut Health Alcohol can disrupt the balance of healthy gut bacteria and irritate the digestive tract. Over time, this may contribute to bloating, digestive discomfort, fatigue, brain fog, and mood changes. The exciting news? Every alcohol-free day gives your gut an opportunity to restore balance. Feed the Good Bugs One of the best things you can do for your gut is eat foods that nourish beneficial bacteria. Think of your gut like a garden. The more you feed it, the better it grows. Focus on: ✔ Vegetables ✔ Fruits ✔ Beans and legumes ✔ Nuts and seeds ✔ Fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, or sauerkraut Small improvements can make a big difference. What I've Learned One of the biggest surprises after giving up alcohol was realizing how much better my digestion and energy became. Feeling good isn't about deprivation. It's about nourishment. Today's Action Steps ✓ Add a probiotic-rich food ✓ Eat an extra serving of vegetables ✓ Continue prioritizing hydration ✓ Pay attention to how your digestion feels Reflection Question How does my digestion affect my mood, energy, and overall well-being? Take a few moments to reflect. Have you noticed a connection between how your stomach feels and how you feel emotionally? The more awareness you build, the more empowered you become. Remember, healing your gut isn't just about improving digestion, it's about creating a stronger foundation for your brain, your mood, and your recovery.
Lesson 57 Day Dry July Detox: Day 4-Stress Less, Recover MoreAudio·6 min
Welcome to Day 4! Let's talk about stress. Life can be busy, unpredictable, and sometimes overwhelming. For many people, alcohol becomes a way to unwind or take the edge off after a stressful day. I know that was true for me. The problem is that alcohol may temporarily numb stress, but it doesn't actually solve it. In fact, it often leaves us feeling more depleted, anxious, and tired. Your Body's Stress Response Your nervous system is designed to protect you. When your brain senses stress, your body releases stress hormones and shifts into "fight or flight" mode. This response is helpful during emergencies. It's less helpful when we're dealing with traffic, emails, deadlines, or everyday stressors. The goal isn't to eliminate stress. The goal is to learn how to calm the nervous system more effectively. Small Tools, Big Results One thing I've learned is that stress management doesn't have to be complicated. Sometimes the most effective tools are the simplest: ✔ Deep breathing ✔ Walking ✔ Stretching ✔ Music ✔ Journaling ✔ Spending time outside These small habits send a message to your brain: "I'm safe. I can handle this." Build Your Stress Toolbox The next time stress shows up, ask yourself: "What can I do to support myself right now?" The more healthy tools you have available, the less likely you are to rely on alcohol to cope. Today's Action Steps ✓ Practice your breathing exercise ✓ Take a 10-minute walk ✓ Write down three healthy stress-management tools ✓ Continue nourishing your body Reflection Question What healthy tools can I use when stress shows up? Create your list today. Keep it somewhere visible. Remember, you don't need to remove all stress from your life. You simply need better ways to move through it. And with practice, those new ways become your new normal.
Lesson 67 Day Dry July Detox: Day 5- Sleep, Energy and RecoveryAudio·6 min
Welcome to Day 5! You've made it five days! Take a moment to celebrate that. Whether this week has felt easy, challenging, eye-opening, or a little bit of everything, you're showing up for yourself—and that matters. Today we're talking about one of the most powerful ways to support your health: sleep. Many people are surprised to discover that one of the first benefits of taking a break from alcohol is better sleep. And when sleep improves, everything else tends to improve too. Alcohol and Sleep For years, I thought alcohol helped me sleep. Maybe you can relate. While alcohol may help some people fall asleep faster, it often disrupts the quality of sleep throughout the night. Many people wake up feeling tired, foggy, or unrested even after a full night's sleep. The good news is that your body knows how to sleep naturally. Sometimes it simply needs time to relearn. Why Sleep Matters Sleep is when your body performs some of its most important maintenance and repair work. During sleep, your brain organizes memories, regulates hormones, repairs tissues, and helps support emotional balance. When sleep suffers, life often feels harder. Cravings may feel stronger. Energy may feel lower. Stress may feel bigger. The better you sleep, the easier it becomes to make healthy choices. Simple Sleep Upgrades You don't need a perfect bedtime routine. A few simple habits can go a long way: ✔ Turn off screens earlier ✔ Keep your room cool and dark ✔ Practice gratitude before bed ✔ Avoid heavy meals right before sleep ✔ Create a calming nighttime routine Think of it as creating an invitation for sleep. Energy Comes From More Than Coffee As a dietitian, I often hear people say they want more energy. What they're really looking for is vitality. Real energy comes from good sleep, balanced nutrition, hydration, movement, and stress management. The great news is that you've already been working on all of those this week. Create a relaxing bedtime routine tonight. Today's Action Steps ✓ Limit screens before bed ✓ Listen to the Sleep Support audio ✓ Write down three things you're grateful for ✓ Continue healthy meals and hydration Reflection Question How does my sleep affect my mood, energy, and cravings? Think about how you feel after a great night of sleep versus a poor one. What changes do you notice? What sleep habit could you improve starting tonight? Remember, sleep isn't a luxury. It's one of the most powerful recovery tools you have. And every night of quality sleep is an investment in the person you're becoming.
Lesson 77 Day Dry July Detox: Day 6-Rewire Your HabitsAudio·6 min
Welcome to Day 6! Can you believe you're almost at the finish line? By now, you've likely learned something about yourself—your habits, your triggers, your cravings, or maybe even how good it feels to wake up alcohol-free. Today we're going to talk about something incredibly exciting: Your brain can change. Your Brain Is Always Learning Every habit you have today started with repetition. At some point, your brain learned that alcohol was connected to relaxation, socializing, celebration, stress relief, or simply the end of a long day. The more often those experiences happened together, the stronger those connections became. But here's the amazing part: Your brain can build new connections too. This ability is called neuroplasticity, and it's one of the reasons positive change is possible at any age. Small Changes Create Big Results Many people think change happens through one big decision. In reality, lasting change is usually built through small daily actions. One healthy breakfast. One walk. One deep breath. One alcohol-free evening. One good night's sleep. These small wins may not seem dramatic, but they add up over time. Awareness Creates Choice One of the most powerful things you can do is simply notice your habits. Notice when you normally reach for a drink. Notice what you're feeling. Notice what's happening around you. That awareness creates space. And in that space, you get to choose something different. Becoming Your Future Self I love asking this question: Who do you want to become? Not what do you want to stop doing. Who do you want to be? A person with more energy? More confidence? More peace? More health? Every healthy choice you make today is a vote for that future version of yourself. High Vibe Challenge 🏆 Future Self Letter Write a short note from your future self thanking you for making healthy changes today. Today's Action Steps ✓ Identify one habit that supports your health ✓ Practice breathwork ✓ Write down three benefits you've experienced this week ✓ Celebrate one win Reflection Question Who am I becoming through the choices I'm making today? Take a few minutes to really think about this. Not who you were. Not who others expect you to be. Who are you becoming? Because every healthy choice, every alcohol-free day, and every act of self-care is helping shape that future version of you.
Lesson 87 Day Dry July Detox: Day 7-Your Next Chapter Starts NowAudio·5 min
Welcome to Day 7! You did it! Take a moment to appreciate how far you've come this week. Seven days ago, you made a commitment to yourself. You chose to pause, reflect, learn, and explore what life might feel like without alcohol. Whether you've noticed huge changes or subtle ones, every step matters. Take a Look Back and think about where you were on Day 1. How was your energy? Your sleep? Your mood? Your cravings? Your motivation? Have you noticed any shifts? Many people are surprised by how much can change in just one week. Sometimes the biggest transformations begin with the smallest decisions. What Happens Next? One of the most common questions I hear is: "How long does it take to feel better?" The truth is that everyone is different. Some people notice benefits within days. Others notice changes over weeks or months. The important thing to remember is that your body is incredibly adaptable. The longer you support it with healthy habits, the more benefits you're likely to experience. What I Learned When I first stopped drinking, I couldn't imagine enjoying life without alcohol. Now, looking back after 8 years, I can honestly say I feel healthier, calmer, more energetic, and more connected to myself than I ever did before. Not because life became perfect. But because I learned how to support my mind and body in a healthier way. That's what I hope you've started discovering this week. Your High Vibe Toolbox Over the past seven days you've learned about: ✔ Balanced nutrition ✔ Blood sugar stability ✔ Cravings and triggers ✔ Gut health ✔ Stress management ✔ Better sleep ✔ Healthy habits These aren't just ideas. They're tools you can continue using every day. What's Possible? Instead of asking: "Can I make it through seven days?" Try asking: "What might happen if I continued for another week?" Or another month? Stay curious. You may be surprised by what's possible. Today's Action Steps ✓ Reflect on the biggest lesson you learned this week ✓ Write down three positive changes you've noticed ✓ Create one health goal for the next 30 days ✓ Celebrate yourself—you've earned it Reflection Question What do I want my life to look and feel like 30 days from now? Dream a little. Write it down. Be specific. Your future starts with the choices you make today. And today, you've already proven that you're capable of more than you may have realized. Thank you for allowing me to be part of your journey this week. I am cheering you on every step of the way. Remember: One day becomes one week. One week becomes one month. One month becomes a new life. And sometimes, that new life turns out to be better than you ever imagined. Congratulations on completing the Dry July Detox!! This is not the end, it is just the beginning.
